The Ghost that Didn't Belong by Jason

Jonna Rapide had arrived at last. All year she looked forward to spending part of her summer vacation with her grandparents.

That’s the first sentence of the story, it really catches my attention, and now I know that the story happens on a summer vacation and at her grandparents place. Got to read this book, it’s so fun and when you are reading it, it really seems that you’re in the book. The suspense is great, details also. The title also catches my attention, “The ghost ship that didn’t belong.” The first night there was a weird sound that Jonna heard, she was very scared. What’s funny is that it was so detailed that also “I” was scared. When she heard it she went and took a look outside. It was the “Ghost ship”

And there is a feature that I think is also very good, each name of the chapter is good because it gives us a clue of what’s going to happen. Also Mat and Jonna found a girl that was called “Effie Price” That girl had a ship and that ship was the ghost ship. The features in this book are really good for example: The author had written a sentence about the narrator saying where and when was the story happening. And for a nother example the author started detailing the house of the family. Example: “The house of the union was a sturdy, 2 storey building made with logs, With a shake roof that came to a peak at the front, and it was very old.” So that paragraph was detailed a lot.

The author also used good words, not boring words but words that sounds professional, for example: “Jonna fallowed the others upstairs, put on their pyjamas, and “Padded” down the stairs.” So the word is padded, as you can see it’s a very good word and also a specific word. Instead of walked the author wrote padded.

The ending was good because the author put two different feelings. First of all the feelings are good and sad. The good one is that they were able to get the ghost. And the bad news is that Effie Price was dead, she drowned in cold water.

She wanted to save another girl that didn’t know how to swim and she went to save her but eventually Effie price didn’t make it to the surface.

Thanksgiving

By: William Pelletier

Thanksgiving on Thursday

Did you already dream to go back in time? Jack and Annie are two kids that go back in time aft. In this adventure they go in time of the Pilgrims in USA.

Pilgrims are people who do a journey from a point to a point. After they arrived where they wanted, they settle there.

My book was about 2 kids that travels back in time and needs to special magic that when they are finish working they all gather. They found the special magic when they gathered to eat for the first thanksgiving.

In my book there were old American like thee (you >1), thy (your), thou (you), tis (it is), thine, indeed. I think my book was an great book because it was at my level, it had old American so it made me wondered of what they mean. I would give 4 hole stars to this book because I think it could be longer and more action during some chapters. Or else the book is a great book.

This book reminds me about a TV show that is called yacary. Yacary is a TV show that has sort of pilgrims in it because there’s people that came the other side of the ocean. After they search for a nice land to settle. The idea of my book and the tv show it that feeling a new nature and a home.

The author used a lot of dialogue so we understand the story and what was happening.

There were not a lot of suspense but when they were it was really suspense. Like when jack wanted to take out the turkey from the fire but he burned. The turkey fell into the and he thought that he was in trouble but when he saw all the meat and food that were on the tables. So they were not in trouble.

The author used a narrator as the point of view of the story because I think that it was easier for her and made a great story.

Ghosts by William S

This boy had a power of seeing ghosts. Every month, a ghost came to see him. His dad had died in a car crash and he was praying that his ghost would come.  But it never did. One special ghost came and it was his uncle.  His name was RV.  Uncle RV talked like he had a blood cell explode in his mind (a stroke), so it was hard to understand him.  He could make out the words, though.   Uncle Rv had three things he wanted to give to Aunt Julia, his wife.  His first thing was notes.  His second thing was a painting.  His third thing was a box in the garden full of money and mail.  After Uncle RV had finished this task, he gave something to the boy.  It was an old bike. The boy found it perfect for him.  On the bike, were many pockets. The boy thinks that one pocket might bring his dad to him.

This book reminds me that accidents happen.  You can't go back in time.  You will be sad for the rest of your life, but you can still laugh, help others, and have fun.

This story reminds me of a dog I used to have.  After he died, I used to pray that he would come back and come in my bed and be with me forever.

I felt suspense when Billy Barker, the bully, saw ghosts like the boy. One day, Uncle RV came outside .  Billy Barker was with the boy, punching him.  Billy Barker saw the ghost, too, and thought that it was the boy's dad.  He told the boy he would stop punching him because his dad was there.  The boy said that it wasn't his dad.  It's my dead uncle. Billy Barker said that it wasn't true.  The boy said that he would show Billy, that the ghost could even fly. Uncle RV tried to do a flip but he wasn't able.

This story couldn't really happen, but it seemed real because the author put real details into the description.  For example, they could smell the ghost.

I liked this book because it had alot of suspense and emotion.  There were sad and funny moments.

The Giver by Julien

The Giver

Give/verb, def: To pass something to another being.

Giving is good, if your intentions are right.
Receiving is fine if you learn to say goodbye.
Hold on to your dreams they have good advice.
Care for each thing, even a fly.
Mountains are big, and you are tall.
You have feet so climb and don't fall.
Everything can talk, so use your voice.
Let's hear that sweet sound that reasons our fate.
Let's hear that sweet sound that molds our clay.
Let's here that sweet sound that gives us our pride.
Let's hear that sweet sound that makes us survive.
To give, it can be objects, love or pain but in this story a boy struggles to lift the heavy burden of the entire community’s memories. Of the entire community’s nightmares...

The author did a great job creating a realistic community that could relate to real life. For example: The Nazi party. Hitler would “brain wash” the Germans to think that Jewish people where bad and they did crimes such as stealing, cheating (etc...) just like with the community they would give out pills for “safety” even though they were drugs to make sure the citizens would keep working and not get distracted. I think the pills are a symbol of
dictatorship and control.

I think the tittle is great. It is mysterious so people want to read more. The old man (the giver) on the cover of the book makes the book looked serious and exiting at the same time. When my sister handed me the book I must admit, i wasn't too exited, but when i read the first chapter i loved it.

This book reminds me of the Hunger Games a little bit, they live in a small community, they have no choice and everything is unfairly run by a government Also, Jonas sacrifices himself to help his friends feel emotion. Just like Katniss sacrifices herself for her sister Prim.

Colours Red, the colour of courage, that was Jonah’s first colour he saw. I think that the colours are a symbol of choice. Blue or red sweater?, Black or white shoes?, Group or individual, Jonas chose the group.

I think the author wrote this book to transmit a message to the world. Appreciate life. You live to be happy. Education as you may know may be boring but in the end it is for your happiness. You learn to get a job, work at the job, get money, and at the end of the cycle you buy stuff that makes you happy. The author wants show that being happy doesn't mean eating something you like or being safe, it means having a good time with someone or enjoying art and landscapes and going on an adventure. For example a candle, it makes you feel warm, its beautiful but it isn't safe but devour new modern lights that are a lot safer. We chose to enjoy life because that's what we are born to do.

Brian's winter By: samuel simard

Brians Winter By : Gary Paulson

Samuel simard 6B

The story

It was cold, Brian needed help. He was frozen and desperet. He only had a hatchet. Brian was a survivor.

Themes

One of the qualities that Brian had was that he was brave. Brave enough to get up and fightt with a bear in the middle of the night. Also Brian was a creather. He was making arrows so he could kill an animal and feed him self. Also Brave to support the extrem cold weather outside ex: -35.

One lesson I learned was that first o fall you always pay attention when you are in the woods, especially when you are alone. Also don’t be scard to kill an animal, because you need to stay strong and have lots of energy in the woods. I learned a leason that you should never give up like Brian did. Plus making these things with no help! Brian made alot of arrows to hunt.

Features

One of the features that Gary Paulson used alot in the book is detailing everything explaining every single detail. Ex: Brian had lots of dreams about food food he would like to eat, food he would like to have, and food that he had already eaten. Also Gary uses very few diologue. Ex: didn’t.

Opinion

My opinion to this book is that I find that the Gary explained to much and detailed to much. I would also liked it better if he would of used more diologue.

And just a tinny bit more suspence.

Stratigies

One of the stratigies I mostly used while reading this book was visualize the scene. Especially when Brian was hunting.

Connection
My connection was based on a television show I saw on canal D. It was a men climbing Mount Everest and he was not well dressed for the weather so he froze in the arms of jesus.

Character

In this story their are only one character and it’s Brian. Brian had to survive in the cold with a few thins that he founed in the plane affter de crash. He found a blanket which he used alot to keep him self warm, a pot to boile water and cook, a batterie with a flash light, and finnaly fire. The main thing he did was hunt study animals and make more and more arrows cause when he would shot on an animal he would loose it.

I find that unusual that there were only one character in the story. It’s because Brian was the only survivor affter the plane crash. It’ rear that I red a book with only one character.

Message

The message is probebly to stay strong and to do efforts and help you’re self when you are stuck in a situation like Brian was.

My question to the class

If you were Brian and had have a plane crash What would you’ve done to survive?

Miss Popularity

                                                 Little Summarize

Fashion! Fashion is the only thing that cassie can't stop thinking about. Before classes she goes in the bathroom and sprays her hair, puts some lipstick on. She didn't care if she was knew, because she just thought about fashion and being popular.

                                                         Connection

I'm not really a girl who really wants to be popular but look around you, some people just think about that. The world turns you know other things are awaiting you out there not just fashion.

                                                    Meaning

Other people might be mean with you but don't give up. Do like your destiny wants. Do something that others would be jealous  about. Like cassie she did a Fashion show. People that were mean with herare now nice. Don't let them ruin you. She gave Mary ellen another chance to be her friend.

                                                       Features

There isn't a lot of features. But the way the author put it is amazing. There is alot of details, explaining how mean Mary ellen is. For example: "First, off we don't wear dresses here at Oak Grove." And that was very well detailed right after the dialogue.

                                                     Think...

For my statement i think that the book is wonderful. But rememeber never be mean to anybody wether you like him or her. The book is WOW, it explains absolutely everything about being mean and a little bit normal. Because Cassie is really addict on fashion and being popular but she is nice to others!

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by Malorie

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS

Prejudice sum
Prejudice. That’s what this book is about. 70 years ago, the holocaust, a man named Hitler thought that he didn't like the Jews. He made a concentration camp to kill them. In this story, a boy named Bruno goes to live on the other side of the camp because his dad is a soldier and works in the Nazi party. Bruno walks along the fence and finds a boy that is imprisoned in the concentration camp. Bruno envies Shmuel, the boy in the camp, because there are more people and kids on the other side.

Gratefulness
It’s weird how 2 lives can be so different. Bruno and Shmuel share the same birth date, the same age. They both were obliged to live at Out-With. However, they both have completely different lives. Bruno wasn't grateful for what he had and maybe if he had been, the story wouldn't have ended like it did. Though of course, it’s just a story told by the author.

Why A Tragic Ending?
Why did the author end it in such a sad way? In the end, Bruno decides to sneak on the other side of the fence. The soldiers say it’s time to march. They take the prisoners to a place and kill all of the Jewish people but, hidden from the soliders, Bruno was with them. I think the author put that tragic ending to make us see how sad the time in history really was and how people, not just adults, got killed because of their religion. I think it’s not fair.

Child’s Point Of View
The author wrote this story in the child’s point of view mostly to show that people didn't understand what was going on around them during the Holocaust. I think the author wrote the point of view through a naive child to show the reader that before the event, everybody’s lives were just the same as ours. Also to show that even 9 year old kids were involved.

Foreshadowing
The author foreshadowed a lot!! In the titles, he would summarize the chapter into one small sentence. For example,'Bruno Tells A Perfectly Reasonable Lie'. I think the author could have added a bit more imagination to the titles, though I really liked the last chapter title, 'The Last Chapter'. It really brings an end and the reader can feel that something will end the story, whether it's good or bad. In the few last pages of the book you can really predict what's going to happen. Bruno is being taken away with the Jews because he was on the other side and is going on a 'march'. I predicted that their lives were going to end. I was right.

Symbols
You can find many symbols in this book but I found one that was big. The fence. It symbolizes divisions that shouldn't have been made.  Hitler decided that the Jewish are different from us. But what exactly is 'us'? We are no different from Jewish people. The fence can also symbolize 'no freedom'. The camp prevents the Jews from having their freedom and the fence keeps them from having their will.

Inferring
In this book you have to know some facts about the Holocaust and the reader has to infer. At the end when Bruno, Shmuel and other Jewish people go in this room and it goes black and Bruno's family can't find their little boy anymore, you have to infer that he, with the prisoners, got killed by poisonous gas. Or when Shmuel's father was sent to work and wasn't found again you have to think about what happened in a concentration camp.

Contrast
The reader views 2 lives that couldn't be more opposite even if they share the same ending. Bruno is worried about what kind of cake to give to Shmuel while Shmuel is worried about getting killed. Bruno believes that he and his friend couldn't be more the same.

Connection
This book is set in World War 2. It is a reminder of the rights with have in a democratic society. In the 20th century, the Jews were slowly deprived of their rights. At first, there were rumours in the radio and the news papers that the Jewish were thieves and that. Then they had to put the Star of David on their shirts to show that they were different. After that they were deprived of their jobs. Then they were sent to work camps to get murdered. All of that reminds me of last spring, when the Quebec government made a rule that groups couldn’t protest peacefully.  Our right to protest was modified. It's important to protect democratic rights such as free speech, the right to vote, the right to an education.

Remember
Fences like the one in the book still exist to remember the dark events. We should remember Bruno’s and Shmuel’s story for there is many more stories that are similar to this one. The lost stories must be retold to represent the people who couldn’t live and tell the story themselves.
