Paul's visit

Facing Choices I like Paul’s presentation because it was clear and it made me understand more about the choices and difficult moments that might face me in high school. I didn’t know how bullying could affect a person’s life so strongly. That maybe one little comment could make a person believe what other mean things people say to the victim. That that one little comment could lower the student’s grades, make him or her skip school, and even think of suicide. I learned that there are five different types of bullying: physical, psychological, cyber, sexual, and verbal. Girls sometimes exclude each other. There are two ways (that I have learned so far) to help people who suffer from bullying. The first is to just listen to them. Don’t talk, just listen. Show sympathy. Be there for that person. Give them a hug. Secondly, stand up for that person. Help the person report the bullying. Make them feel that they’re not alone. Paul also talked about why people use drugs and alcohol. He drew a scale to show how people who get dependent on drugs need more and more just to feel ‘normal’. They feel high for awhile, then very down. They need more and more just to get through the day. Imagine that. After that, it gets out of hand and you can’t even feel normal any more. It made me realize how dangerous drugs can be. If I ever get asked to take drugs, I’ll remember that scale. Paul used humour to keep our attention. But sometimes his face looked sad. I think it’s because he cares about the students he works with. Paul told us that he used to hang out with 17 friends. 10 died. 4 went to prison and only 3 went to university. Think of that. 14/17 didn’t have a good road in life. That’s way too much. It’s really sad how kids just throw their lives away like that. Mr. Paul told us that about 3 kids a day suicide because of bullying and drugs. I liked it when he said that, for him, one suicide was too much. I agree. Finally, Paul told us about a drug called GHB that can make you forget what happened to you so someone can make you do things you don’t want to do. Remember: never leave your drink on a table. Never accept an open drink from a stranger. Always stand up for yourself. Malorie Dion, 6B

Wherever I go valedictorian speech

WHEREVER WE GO All parents ask, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Those answers changed every year. For example, Hugo, in grade 1, what did you want to be when you grew up? I knew that I wanted to be a princess! Now, I would like to be an interior designer or a teacher. What about you Hugo? At Holland, we learned that we can set goals and become almost anything. We learned to understand complex ideas about features, democracy, justice, resistance. We studied New France, light, mealworms, astronomy. We dissected owl pellets and chicken wings. We learned to calculate the area of a triangular prism! Holland School also gave us friends and memories. I remember all the Halloween parties and how funny our costumes were! Going to the pool was always fun! We celebrated every season: Terry Fox runs, Skating rinks, spaghetti suppers, and track and field... I would like to say thank you to all the teachers and principals who tried their best to make us happy and educated. I remember that, at nap time in kindergarten, I used to fake sleep just to get a gummy bear! In grade 1, we discovered the Daily Five and reading stamina! In grade 2, I liked shopping at the class store and, in grade three, we even visited the teacher’s house. In grade 4, I loved the sleepover at the end of the year. In grade 5, I appreciated Drama and all the jokes in class. Playing Bingo and Trois Photos was a nice break from learning French grammar. This year, I liked going to the Peps and the Hobbit. I can’t wait for Camp Keno. When we came to Holland in Kindergarten, our only concerns were snacks and play time. In grade two, ‘style’ meant wearing the most colours possible at the same time. Now, as we head into high school, we worry about tests, high school courses, taking the city bus, and making new friends. As we grow, our priorities change. People and experiences influence us. Our choices, not just our abilities, make us who we are. All my years at Holland hold special memories. Life can be hard, but the support of teachers, parents, and friends can make it easier. We are leaving elementary school. Wherever we go, we will remember the good start we had here. One of the books we read this year was the Hunger Games. So, in closing, let games begin!! And may the odds be ever in your favour!

Wherever I Go

Where ever I go I could be a scientist, I could be a plane, I could be flying, nothing is the same, I could be astronaut, take off in space but wherever I go, whatever I do, I know that I’ll be something great! I could be a space ship, aiming for the moon, if I miss it I’ll orbit back around soon, I WILL be different, don’t care what people think because I know deep inside that I’LL BE SOMETHING GREAT! I will be a graduate, missing Holland, my last day, I will make new friends, learn from my mistakes, I will have ideas, ideas that open gates, and I know wherever I go, whatever I do, I’LL BE SOMETHING GREAT By Julien Dion

April Outings

An Artful Trip to the Museum
Last week, 6G and  6B went to the Muse des Beaux Arts du Quebec. The title of the exhibit was Les Placticiens. The paintings were made by artists such as Tousignant. They were made in 1950 to 1960. The works of art were mostly  geometric shapes, strips of different bright concentric circles. There were also other paintings but with more dark colors and curved lines. There was one with plenty of shapes but one side was straight sided figures and the other curved lines. We noticed the primary and secondary colors, complementary colors, and warm and cool colors.  Some paintings created an effect of optical illusion. After the tour, we made a piece of art with three colours but only squares.
6B also went swimming  at the Y on Thursday, April 18 th. It was splashing fun!

Used Book Sale

NEW HOMES FOR OLD BOOKS
The grade sixes would like to thank the Holland Community for supporting our Used Book Sale held last April 24.  Every book found a new home; we definitely accomplished our goals of encouraging reading and promoting the idea of reusing items rather than buying new ones.  One grade three shopper exclaimed, ‘ this book sale was a great idea.  I love reading and now I have ten new books!’  That’s what it’s all about!  We received many donations of a variety of books enabling us to raise $174 for the Canadian Wildlife Federation.  Happy reading!

will S Amulet

My Reading Response for Amulet 2

I will be presenting to you the Amulet Book 2.

There are 3 main characters: Emily, Nathan, and their Mom. Emily is the most important character in this story because she got chosen to be the Stone keeper.  A stone keeper is chosen to hold and protect the amulet.  The amulet holds very powerful powers that can destroy almost anything. She is brave because she went to the deadliest mountain.  She risked her life to save her mom by taking a bite of a fruit even though she didn’t know if it was the right one and could of died if it wasn’t the good one.  She was looking for the healing fruit to save her mon who had been poisoned by a spider.  She is also smart because, at one point in the book, people tell her “get more, get more fruit”.  But she knew that if she took too much people would come and attack her to get the special fruit.  As well she knew that one was enough and the rest was wasteful.

Nathan is the second most important person in this story because he is the chief of the Guardians.  The Guardians were once people just like you and me but were transformed into animals over time.  He also had the cool job to control and drive the house.  It was the way they travelled around.  He doesn’t give up. He always wants to be with his sister.  He was scared that his mom would die so he didn’t want to feel the same way for his sister Emily.

I liked this book because it is a graphic novel.  It has pictures and is not too hard to read. I like these kinds of books.  Also, I like this book because it has adventure and action.  For example, one of the speaking trees called Alder says you can only get a special fruit at the top of the mountain and the characters go there.  An other example of the action is when one of the Stone keepers loses control and becomes a giant beast.  The house’s arms get ripped off but then Emily comes and uses the power of the stone to put them back on again so they can continue fighting.

There was suspense also in this story.  For example, when the fight was finished, she put so much power into the fight that the stone was getting so powerful that it wanted to overpower her.  We didn’t know if she would succeed in regaining control.  This is one of the most suspenseful parts in the book, I felt like if she was going to die so my heart raced a bit.

There were lots of different camera angles.  My favorite one was looking up but on a diagonal.  The picture was a thrown fist so it looked like it was moving.  I felt that the artist put a lot of time in these pictures.  I couldn’t have done that myself for all 5 books.

The strongest character in my opinion is Emily. She never wants to give up.  She always wants to use her own force and will and not the force of the amulet.
This book teaches us that almost losing someone who is close to you can make you act bravely.  You never want to give up looking for that person or trying to help them.  For example, in the story, when Emily’s mom got poisoned by a huge spider, Emily heard that the only medicine that might save her mom was on the mountain, where dangers lurked.  Emily took her courage and decided to go quickly to the mountain.  She thought, “this is my mom and I will save her”.
In my real life when my dog died, I didn’t want to lose him so I got really sad.  The next morning, I thought it was all a dream.  I yelled for him and he wasn’t there.  I would have done anything to have saved him.

I’m really looking forward to reading the other 3 books.

Thank-you.

Chicken Hare by Julien

Oral language arts reading presentation

The title of my book is called “Chicken Hare”. It represents the main character that is half chicken, half hare. He has ears and tail like a rabbit but his legs and wings are like a chicken. He is a rare and exotic creature that’s nick-named “chicken legs”. The journey begins with a mysterious silhouette of a man and 2 small furry animals. It’s not until the second page that you really see the setting and the characters. The author did a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat and making you keep reading. The suspense also rises as you jump in head first into dialogue. You can tell this book is a fantasy by looking at the first page. The animals are talking and the man is talking about some kind of monster with sharp teeth called shromph. The author also exaggerates with his art by making rich people have big noses, servants have small ones and he made the bad buys look as hideous and savage. Unshaved beard, loose jeans, huge smiles with pointy teeth and more. The setting is in a huge snow storm with mountains of ice. It reminded me of Antarctica.

I think the meaning of the book is being different doesn’t mean you have different rights and respect. Klaus, the evil taxidermist, wants to kill and stuff chicken Hare just because he’s weird and different; I think everybody should have the same rights, the same respect and the same rules. I also the author wants to tell us that being too controlling doesn’t help relationships. For example Mr. Klaus stuffs his pets because he doesn’t want them to run away. In life you need to let your friends have their own air bubble and you have to give them space to live. When Chicken Hare and his friends: Banjo the monkey, Meg, and Abe the turtle, Escape Klaus, chicken legs finds a goat’s ghost and he chooses to follow him. He gets separated from the group. The goat, (Mr. Buttons) asks him a favour. Mr Buttons wants to get rid of his old master Klaus because it was his fault he was stuffing animals. He ran away from his master and then Klaus didn’t want his pets to run away so he stuffed them instead. I think that Mr. Buttons represents Martin Luther King because he wants to help the animals who are different. Just like Martin wanted to help the black citizens. I also think that Klaus represents the old government that were against the people with different skin colors. In my opinion, I see Chicken Hare as the strongest character because he is a leader and the intelligent one of the pack. He’s the one who gets the plans; he’s the one who keeps the team from breaking down. Like Banjo and Meg the siblings. If it weren’t be for chicken hare they would have fought each other and not the enemy. At the end they help each other when in need and even like one another. My favourite character was banjo because his personality was like mine. He is a clown and makes jokes all the time. He always looks on the bright side and even though facing death right in the face he can pull out a joke and cheer everyone up in a second. The author chose to make a graphic novel instead of a regular novel because he wanted to express his thoughts in more than just words. For example; he wanted to say that being different doesn’t mean you are weaker. He made the shromph small but very strong and powerful. He wouldn’t have been able to do that in words so that’s why he drew it instead.

Bar Code Tatoo by Malorie

BOOK TALK ----> The Bar Code Tattoo

A tattoo. What harm could a simple tattoo make? In this book getting a bar code tattoo can ruin your life for others or improve it depending if you are different or have a problem. The thing is that no one has a problem, we’re perfect the way we are, however global 1 (the government or dictator) has a problem with people that are not like him. That reminds me of the Nazi party. They would eliminate people because they weren’t like him, which is really wrong, but what’s worse is that in this book Global 1 doesn’t just kill people by putting nanobots in the barcode tattoo, they pretend that it’s not them. The nanobots make the person think of suicidal thoughts and eventually commit suicide because of Global 1 and they just claim that it was a coincidence that they had the tattoo. They control the nanobots and if they decide that they don’t like one person they just press a button and it’s off their hands. The barcode tattoo is also the only way they can pay, work and much more, if someone has a tattoo and they have cancer or something, it will appear on the scanner and they will not take in the money or the identity. Kayla tries to run away from Global 1 by escaping to Canada. It’s a bit like the slaves in United States that were trying to escape from slavery. The population are in some ways slaves. If they have to listen to Global 1 or they get murdered and there’s no way of escaping except running to Canada. I think that the barcode is a symbol of dictatorship. Global 1 rules the whole world even if most of the population hates them. They even made a rule that if you don’t have a barcode tattoo you can go to jail or be punished by death.

When Kayla Reed runs away from Global 1 I got suspenseful because I wonder what happened to her friends that she worked with for Americans rights, Mfumbe her boyfriend, Allyson her friend, Augiel her friend, Amber her best friend.  They all went in different directions and we didn’t get to see them for a while. We also can predict that there is something different with Kayla. The author foreshadowed that she was a clone from her ‘‘Grandmother’’ and that she had bird DNA by her loving birds, talking telepathically and seeing visions of her clones.

I think that the ideas are really different in a good way. For example, the idea that global 1 rules the world, Kayla being a clone with an animal’s DNA which was surprising and much more... I really liked how all of that science fiction was also blended with real life to be more appealing for a younger audience like me. Suzane Weyn added a normal teenage girl life into her story, like a bit of romance, the urge of fitting in etc... The plot twisting events that I found were when Zeakel and Nedra were in Kayla’s group to stop Global 1 but really they were working for tattoo gen which forces people to get tattoos. Kayla and Zeakel were together but once she found that he was working against her she broke up. I wasn’t expecting that.

I think Kayla was the strongest character was Kayla because her father died because of Global 1 and the tattoo. Her mother died in her burning house trying to burn off her tattoo. Kayla had to run away her whole life until her and her friends hacked in a computer and shut down the whole system. However she stood up for herself and the whole world. I think we should learn by her actions and stand up for ourselves. Suzane made that message because every day kids and teenagers get bullied and make awful decisions because they are too afraid to speak up. Everyone has been bullied or teased at least once in their lives, so don’t let them get to you. I believe the author used exaggeration to prove herself right, like Global 1killing people for not having tattoos, which is a big problem. She’s just trying to say that even in little situation, don’t be scared and defend yourself and others.

SQ Officier visit

On April 2nd, a member of the Sûreté Québec Police Service, Karine Michaud, visited the grade sixes to speak about choices we’ll be facing as we move into high school. Ms. Michaud works at St. Pat’s, QHS, and Perreault High Schools. She talked to us about some of her experiences with students and illegal drugs, why people take them, and how it`s hard to stop taking drugs. We learned that cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, even energy drinks contain drugs. She suggested that we prepare ahead of time for when someone might offer of drugs. She showed us 7 ways to say no to people who offer drugs, for example, by sticking with friends who also want to say no. She explained that drugs cause physical, legal, and mental consequences for people who use them. They can damage your brain while it is growing by burning cells or preventing cells from growing. It can make you sick and get addicted so you can never stop. You can get a criminal record. She talked about how just trying once is a bad idea. Ms. Michaud said that we should tell an adult if we see people with drugs so that they can get help.

Robotics Competition

On Friday April 5th, four lucky students were allowed to attend to the Robotics competition held at the Musée de la Civilization. There were many teams over there, 27 teams from primary and 18 from secondary. Every team had their robot built when they arrived and were ready to program. We had spent weeks trying different models before deciding that the tank model would work the best. The challenge was to carry four different 1.5 kg bricks to four different places on the mat and you had to be careful not to bump into walls or roll off the mat. You had to use a light sensor to deposit the brick in the right place. If you got the the four programs perfectly the maximum you could get was 1200 points. We had two tries, the first time we got only 300 points, then checked our program figured out the problem and fixed it. On the second try we got 1175 points. With that performance, Holland School finished 2nd at the robotics regional competition with a total of 1475 points.

Dr. Suess

On the morning of March 20, 2 classes from Holland school went to the Show Horton Hears a Who? By Dr.Seuss.  Other schools, such as St. Vincent’s, also attended the play. Other classes from Holland school will be going in a few days. The show was wonderful! The background, lighting, and props were very colorful. This story was presented in 2 worlds, similar to the movie. The costumes were so realistic, and the scene changes, very efficient.  The actors were really great and some were funny. To be honest, they speak very well in English (English is not their first language). You will see that the message of the play was clear. It’s that even if a person is small, he or she is still a person. No matter who they are they still deserve rights, respect, and fun times. That was the message that I got from this show.

Brian's Winter

Brians winter
When I was a little kid, about 6 or 7 years old, every time that I went in a store or something like that, every time I would get lost. For example: one time I was at the IGA my mommy would look around for food while I was not paying attention to her and then I would get lost. Then I would scream mommy and also tell to myself that in a few minutes everything would be back to normal. When people get lost they start panicking, and this boy survived a big adventure. And by the way he was only 13 years old. He was a very intelligent and strong. Not only strong physically but strong in himself, his heart. He believed in himself, that he would survive a that he would get rescued one day. A few months or even years to think of his big and stressful adventure but eventually he will get use not to think about it but he still will remember this big adventure.
Accidents like this is normal, there will always be people that get lost and have big bid life experience like Brian. The ones who loved that person will never forget them and if, if that person comes back, it will be a moment of respect and love for them. When this person will have activities like vacations, have fun with friends and family. The situation will eventually disappear of their minds. And in his adventure he still learned something, he learned how to use special tools and how they work. He also learned how to act in winter without warm clothing. I don’t know how a big life experience like this one felts but I know that it must be a struggle and hard to survive and all of this desast for him. Learning how to use tools like a hatchet, wood, light and many other objects, is very important.

Finland Hockey Team visits

The two grande six classes got to interview Pee Wee hockey players from Finland. We got to ask questions to them and they got to ask question to us. After the interview we noticed that we have many things in common with them. Both classes got to go outside and play with the Finland boys. When the game was finished we went inside to drink a hot chocolate and eat maple syrup cookies, yummy! The Finland coaches gave us chocolate bars and angry bird lollipops. Almost all of the Finland boys had blond hair and blue eyes. We had a great time discovering different king of people and different language. It was a great experience.

Another Take on the Giver

THE GIVER

Why do we learn about the past? Why do we have emotions? Sometimes people ask themselves these questions. They ask ‘What’s the use?’ I think this book was written to remind us of those answers. Humans and animals are alike; however we have the capability to learn, to learn beyond our own life, to learn from the past. We also feel things animals don’t. We have emotions and memories, that’s what makes us special, that’s what makes us human. In the book nobody had emotions or memories, except for one, because they are too scared of the pain. However I think that the painful emotions are worth it for the fun emotions. Those characters never got to live happy emotions like love happiness etc... I think it’s sad not to have the emotions that are worth living for. If you don’t have emotions, what’s the point of living?

Choices. In this book people couldn’t have their choices; the chiefs would decide everything, their jobs, clothes, bicycles, hair etc... The chiefs are like the government, they decide everything. However they still let us have choices, like our jobs. They still make world guidelines (rules) so it doesn’t get out of control; the whole world has the same rules like no murder; the countries have different rules, like slavery in Canada is not permitted; provinces have their own rules, law 101 where you have to have special permission to go to an English school in Quebec; cities also can have simple different laws, like you have to have one type of roof. However our society lets us have some freedom unlike the government in the book. The sad part was that everybody had to be as smart and all the same as everybody. The problem is that everybody learns differently and is different. If a baby wasn’t learning right, then they would kill him. A society shouldn’t have the right to do that. It’s prejudice, just like the holocaust. The Nazi party thought that people had to be like them (not Jewish) or they would kill them. Everybody is person and has the right to live no matter how we are. Difference isn’t bad either. Differences attract.

Change, when you want change you have to do it yourself. Don’t wait for others to do it. Jonas wanted people to feel and learn what he had known because he had the job to keep the memories and the past. People hadn’t known what love is and he wanted that to change. He sacrificed himself so other people could learn what he had. Jonas had sacrificed himself for a whole year because he had to endure all of the pain possible on his own. He left so that it could be a life we have now (2013) with some joy in life. The people could not see the color, which represents not having joy in life. Jonas made a change because he wanted to. If we don’t want war, or something else, we can change that

You say people are different,
You’re different
You call people names,
I can call you names
You say people have to be like you,
I say they don’t
You say we don’t need emotions,
I say what’s the point of living?
You say we don’t need to learn,
I say then let’s just forget the past!
You say it’s too hard to make choices
I say choices make us who we are
You say what’s the point of living?
I say to have fun, accomplice everything you want and have fun

The Hobbit

I just finished reading the graphic novel version of the Hobbit.  The dwarves wanted to get revenge on the dragon because, many years earlier, they built a throne, a mansion, and Smaug, the dragon, stole all the gold and other treasures.

The dwarves' plan was to get a hobbit to act as a burglar, and get through the adventure safely in order to get their mansion back with all the gold and jewels.  The dwarves and the hobbit met many characters on their journey such as goblins, trolls, a leaf king, men, and spiders. In the end, they got what they wanted, but they paid a great price.  Thorin, the dwarf king, died during the adventure.

I think the dwarves did the right thing because they had found all the treasures to begin with and worked hard to build the mansion.  Thorin died happy knowing he was working to get the dwarves back their things.  The story is not just about getting revenge on Smaug, but about getting justice for the hard work the dwarves had done.  The were other people in the village who had lost their homes.  When the tragedy happened, the people got sad and depressed because some of the people close to them died and they would never see them again.  When the dwarves killed Smaug, the people in the village were happy because there would be no more fear that the dragon would attack.  Smaug was wrong to steal the items from the dwarves.  Smaug hurt people, burned down the village, and was greedy.

In our world, people sometimes rob banks, steal from cars and houses, and rob stores.  Other people do vandalism for no reason.  People work hard to get their money and other people shouldn't steal it or other people's things.

Sometimes people do bad things with their lives.  They have to pay back money and they get scared so they do desperate things.

Le Relais

On February 15, the two grade six classes visited  “Le Relais” for snowboarding or skiing.   It was very fun and the snow was perfect for this activity. The beginners, who took lessons, fell often but eventually everyone got back up and continued. The more experienced skiers came to encourage us not to give up.

The weather outside was warm and everyone had a great time. My favourite part was the thrill of going down a huge mountain really fast for the first time in my life.

Some people brought their GO-PROS™ (a camera that you put on your helmet) and we are going to watch ourselves fall on the Smart board and laugh!  It was very fun and I hope I get to go again some other time.

Thanks to the teachers for organizing this event.

Book of Time

By: Félix-antoine berthelot

Have you ever heard of time traveling? Well Sam Faulkner had but he did not really believe in until …..

He had not seen his father for at least 10 days he was gone without leaving a trace. Sam decided to look for him in the bookstore his father had. Inside he had found a rock statue and a coin with a hole in it. He then had a strange feeling to put the coin in the statue. Boom! He was now in a other place and time it was in Scotland the time of Vikings then in a other place and time and a other.

This book was very good. It teached me that our time was perfect compare to other times like when he was in world war 1 . It said told us how these times were bad.

I could visualize everything in my head it was a very good writing. I could see how these places were huge and beautiful.

I got to love the character a lot. It told us how he thought and gave some very good character traits. Unfortunately we got to love some character`s that we only saw for 40 pages and then he goes in a other place witch was almost sad.

It made me remember an old book I read long time ago and it was very good. But sadly I don’t remember the title. It was very

The climax in the story was actually the last five words it said Allan Faulkner (Sam’s dad) had scribbled on the wall of his prison cell “save me Sam, from dad! At this moment I really wanted to read the second book. The climax is a kind of word for suspense for me. I would even say best end of story I have ever read!

Louis Sachar

There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom
By: Louis Sachar
Response By: Charles-Alexandre Côté
“AHHH”. It’s not always fun when there is a boy in the girls’ bathroom.  This review will tell you a dense response of this goofy story by Louis Sachar.

This story is about a boy in 5th grade called Bradley Chalkers.  He has difficulties in school and doesn’t make an effort.  He has no friends because of that.   One day a councillor comes to his school and helps him become good and teaches him how to do efforts.   At the end of the book, he starts doing his homework but he rips it before handing it in.  Then he does homework and he rips it but his councillor gives it to his teacher.

The Story in a Story
A good feature I found in my book was the words of a book in a book.  There were paragraphs of a book called “My parents didn’t steal an elephant” that Bradley read.  When he was reading, he related to the story so the words helped us understand.   There was also a lot of humour. For example, «Everyone got their map out, so did Bradley.  But his map was different.  He had Europe on Canada and Mexico in France.  So he cut it out and put it in U.S.A at the right place.  Bradley was a good cutter.  He cut exactly the black lines.”

“Chalkers.  Stop right now!” Bradley Chalkers is a young boy in grade 5 who always gets into trouble...in the past.  Except he turns out to be very good inside and his councillor helps him show people that he is good on the outside too.  Carla Davis:  A very fine young woman who applied as a councillor at Bradley’s school.  She doesn’t believe in accidents and thinks everything has a reason.

The inside
I think the message of the book is that if someone has difficulty in school, they should be respected equally.  They are just the same as everybody.  All people have difficulties in certain things so really we’re the same.  In the book, Bradley doesn’t do his homework and does not listen in school but he is a nice boy.  He tries to make friends but they reject him like a loser.
How many of you have judged a class mate by his school results?

Oups...
I have a little connection to when Bradley was running and hid in the girls’ bathroom. We were in the M&M store in New York when I had to go to the washroom.  The bathroom labels were M&M characters.  Both looked like boy M&Ms so I went in one of them and it was the girls’ bathroom.  I was lucky there was no one in there!

My Opinion
My opinion of the book is that it makes kids and children understand that judging people by their grades is bad.  It’s smart of the author to pass this message.  It’s also a book full of humour.  The author was probably a humoristic man.  I rate this book 5 stars for its good message and the humour it contains.
In “There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom” book, I focused on predicting.  At each chapter I would try to predict what would happen, but the author kept surprising me.  It was as if he was reading my mind and doing the opposite.  It made my reading more interesting and at the same time suspenseful.

I think it was a good book and I’d like to read more books about this author.

Thirteen Ghosts

Thirteen Ghost!
Do ghosts really exist ?

If yes I’ve never seen one!!!

Some say that ghosts doesn’t exist. But others say that they do exist and if ever you watch the show called Medium, it is about  a girl who can feel them and communicate. They can also tell you that you lost someone that you loved. She well describe her like if she is right beside you.

At the house of my mom, there was a guy who lived before us and he died of a heart attack. He was waiting for his son to wake up so that he could die. One time when I was alone I heard a noise, it was coming from the bedroom of my mother. At first I did not want to go and see because I was to scared. But then I stood up and I went when I approached a frame fell from the wall of my mother. Other people who knows that a person is dead in their house are scared and they want to move. And some of them just like having some ghosts in the house.

What I think from my book the Thirteen Ghost, is that ghosts for me really exists. When a person dies it never really goes away, it stays there with you. Some just want to take revenges because they love their house and they want nobody there. So he well decide to haunt them until they die.

I think that the book really makes you think about was is going to come next, and if they really exist. I think that the book really made me think because it is interesting how people can be there and at the same time you can’t see them.

Just  remember  never communicate or be scared in some hard or scaring circumstances.

The Ghost that Didn't Belong by Jason

Jonna Rapide had arrived at last. All year she looked forward to spending part of her summer vacation with her grandparents.

That’s the first sentence of the story, it really catches my attention, and now I know that the story happens on a summer vacation and at her grandparents place. Got to read this book, it’s so fun and when you are reading it, it really seems that you’re in the book. The suspense is great, details also. The title also catches my attention, “The ghost ship that didn’t belong.” The first night there was a weird sound that Jonna heard, she was very scared. What’s funny is that it was so detailed that also “I” was scared. When she heard it she went and took a look outside. It was the “Ghost ship”

And there is a feature that I think is also very good, each name of the chapter is good because it gives us a clue of what’s going to happen. Also Mat and Jonna found a girl that was called “Effie Price” That girl had a ship and that ship was the ghost ship. The features in this book are really good for example: The author had written a sentence about the narrator saying where and when was the story happening. And for a nother example the author started detailing the house of the family. Example: “The house of the union was a sturdy, 2 storey building made with logs, With a shake roof that came to a peak at the front, and it was very old.” So that paragraph was detailed a lot.

The author also used good words, not boring words but words that sounds professional, for example: “Jonna fallowed the others upstairs, put on their pyjamas, and “Padded” down the stairs.” So the word is padded, as you can see it’s a very good word and also a specific word. Instead of walked the author wrote padded.

The ending was good because the author put two different feelings. First of all the feelings are good and sad. The good one is that they were able to get the ghost. And the bad news is that Effie Price was dead, she drowned in cold water.

She wanted to save another girl that didn’t know how to swim and she went to save her but eventually Effie price didn’t make it to the surface.

Thanksgiving

By: William Pelletier

Thanksgiving on Thursday

Did you already dream to go back in time? Jack and Annie are two kids that go back in time aft. In this adventure they go in time of the Pilgrims in USA.

Pilgrims are people who do a journey from a point to a point. After they arrived where they wanted, they settle there.

My book was about 2 kids that travels back in time and needs to special magic that when they are finish working they all gather. They found the special magic when they gathered to eat for the first thanksgiving.

In my book there were old American like thee (you >1), thy (your), thou (you), tis (it is), thine, indeed. I think my book was an great book because it was at my level, it had old American so it made me wondered of what they mean. I would give 4 hole stars to this book because I think it could be longer and more action during some chapters. Or else the book is a great book.

This book reminds me about a TV show that is called yacary. Yacary is a TV show that has sort of pilgrims in it because there’s people that came the other side of the ocean. After they search for a nice land to settle. The idea of my book and the tv show it that feeling a new nature and a home.

The author used a lot of dialogue so we understand the story and what was happening.

There were not a lot of suspense but when they were it was really suspense. Like when jack wanted to take out the turkey from the fire but he burned. The turkey fell into the and he thought that he was in trouble but when he saw all the meat and food that were on the tables. So they were not in trouble.

The author used a narrator as the point of view of the story because I think that it was easier for her and made a great story.

Ghosts by William S

This boy had a power of seeing ghosts. Every month, a ghost came to see him. His dad had died in a car crash and he was praying that his ghost would come.  But it never did. One special ghost came and it was his uncle.  His name was RV.  Uncle RV talked like he had a blood cell explode in his mind (a stroke), so it was hard to understand him.  He could make out the words, though.   Uncle Rv had three things he wanted to give to Aunt Julia, his wife.  His first thing was notes.  His second thing was a painting.  His third thing was a box in the garden full of money and mail.  After Uncle RV had finished this task, he gave something to the boy.  It was an old bike. The boy found it perfect for him.  On the bike, were many pockets. The boy thinks that one pocket might bring his dad to him.

This book reminds me that accidents happen.  You can't go back in time.  You will be sad for the rest of your life, but you can still laugh, help others, and have fun.

This story reminds me of a dog I used to have.  After he died, I used to pray that he would come back and come in my bed and be with me forever.

I felt suspense when Billy Barker, the bully, saw ghosts like the boy. One day, Uncle RV came outside .  Billy Barker was with the boy, punching him.  Billy Barker saw the ghost, too, and thought that it was the boy's dad.  He told the boy he would stop punching him because his dad was there.  The boy said that it wasn't his dad.  It's my dead uncle. Billy Barker said that it wasn't true.  The boy said that he would show Billy, that the ghost could even fly. Uncle RV tried to do a flip but he wasn't able.

This story couldn't really happen, but it seemed real because the author put real details into the description.  For example, they could smell the ghost.

I liked this book because it had alot of suspense and emotion.  There were sad and funny moments.

The Giver by Julien

The Giver

Give/verb, def: To pass something to another being.

Giving is good, if your intentions are right.
Receiving is fine if you learn to say goodbye.
Hold on to your dreams they have good advice.
Care for each thing, even a fly.
Mountains are big, and you are tall.
You have feet so climb and don't fall.
Everything can talk, so use your voice.
Let's hear that sweet sound that reasons our fate.
Let's hear that sweet sound that molds our clay.
Let's here that sweet sound that gives us our pride.
Let's hear that sweet sound that makes us survive.
To give, it can be objects, love or pain but in this story a boy struggles to lift the heavy burden of the entire community’s memories. Of the entire community’s nightmares...

The author did a great job creating a realistic community that could relate to real life. For example: The Nazi party. Hitler would “brain wash” the Germans to think that Jewish people where bad and they did crimes such as stealing, cheating (etc...) just like with the community they would give out pills for “safety” even though they were drugs to make sure the citizens would keep working and not get distracted. I think the pills are a symbol of
dictatorship and control.

I think the tittle is great. It is mysterious so people want to read more. The old man (the giver) on the cover of the book makes the book looked serious and exiting at the same time. When my sister handed me the book I must admit, i wasn't too exited, but when i read the first chapter i loved it.

This book reminds me of the Hunger Games a little bit, they live in a small community, they have no choice and everything is unfairly run by a government Also, Jonas sacrifices himself to help his friends feel emotion. Just like Katniss sacrifices herself for her sister Prim.

Colours Red, the colour of courage, that was Jonah’s first colour he saw. I think that the colours are a symbol of choice. Blue or red sweater?, Black or white shoes?, Group or individual, Jonas chose the group.

I think the author wrote this book to transmit a message to the world. Appreciate life. You live to be happy. Education as you may know may be boring but in the end it is for your happiness. You learn to get a job, work at the job, get money, and at the end of the cycle you buy stuff that makes you happy. The author wants show that being happy doesn't mean eating something you like or being safe, it means having a good time with someone or enjoying art and landscapes and going on an adventure. For example a candle, it makes you feel warm, its beautiful but it isn't safe but devour new modern lights that are a lot safer. We chose to enjoy life because that's what we are born to do.

Brian's winter By: samuel simard

Brians Winter By : Gary Paulson

Samuel simard 6B

The story

It was cold, Brian needed help. He was frozen and desperet. He only had a hatchet. Brian was a survivor.

Themes

One of the qualities that Brian had was that he was brave. Brave enough to get up and fightt with a bear in the middle of the night. Also Brian was a creather. He was making arrows so he could kill an animal and feed him self. Also Brave to support the extrem cold weather outside ex: -35.

One lesson I learned was that first o fall you always pay attention when you are in the woods, especially when you are alone. Also don’t be scard to kill an animal, because you need to stay strong and have lots of energy in the woods. I learned a leason that you should never give up like Brian did. Plus making these things with no help! Brian made alot of arrows to hunt.

Features

One of the features that Gary Paulson used alot in the book is detailing everything explaining every single detail. Ex: Brian had lots of dreams about food food he would like to eat, food he would like to have, and food that he had already eaten. Also Gary uses very few diologue. Ex: didn’t.

Opinion

My opinion to this book is that I find that the Gary explained to much and detailed to much. I would also liked it better if he would of used more diologue.

And just a tinny bit more suspence.

Stratigies

One of the stratigies I mostly used while reading this book was visualize the scene. Especially when Brian was hunting.

Connection
My connection was based on a television show I saw on canal D. It was a men climbing Mount Everest and he was not well dressed for the weather so he froze in the arms of jesus.

Character

In this story their are only one character and it’s Brian. Brian had to survive in the cold with a few thins that he founed in the plane affter de crash. He found a blanket which he used alot to keep him self warm, a pot to boile water and cook, a batterie with a flash light, and finnaly fire. The main thing he did was hunt study animals and make more and more arrows cause when he would shot on an animal he would loose it.

I find that unusual that there were only one character in the story. It’s because Brian was the only survivor affter the plane crash. It’ rear that I red a book with only one character.

Message

The message is probebly to stay strong and to do efforts and help you’re self when you are stuck in a situation like Brian was.

My question to the class

If you were Brian and had have a plane crash What would you’ve done to survive?

Miss Popularity

                                                 Little Summarize

Fashion! Fashion is the only thing that cassie can't stop thinking about. Before classes she goes in the bathroom and sprays her hair, puts some lipstick on. She didn't care if she was knew, because she just thought about fashion and being popular.

                                                         Connection

I'm not really a girl who really wants to be popular but look around you, some people just think about that. The world turns you know other things are awaiting you out there not just fashion.

                                                    Meaning

Other people might be mean with you but don't give up. Do like your destiny wants. Do something that others would be jealous  about. Like cassie she did a Fashion show. People that were mean with herare now nice. Don't let them ruin you. She gave Mary ellen another chance to be her friend.

                                                       Features

There isn't a lot of features. But the way the author put it is amazing. There is alot of details, explaining how mean Mary ellen is. For example: "First, off we don't wear dresses here at Oak Grove." And that was very well detailed right after the dialogue.

                                                     Think...

For my statement i think that the book is wonderful. But rememeber never be mean to anybody wether you like him or her. The book is WOW, it explains absolutely everything about being mean and a little bit normal. Because Cassie is really addict on fashion and being popular but she is nice to others!

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by Malorie

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS

Prejudice sum
Prejudice. That’s what this book is about. 70 years ago, the holocaust, a man named Hitler thought that he didn't like the Jews. He made a concentration camp to kill them. In this story, a boy named Bruno goes to live on the other side of the camp because his dad is a soldier and works in the Nazi party. Bruno walks along the fence and finds a boy that is imprisoned in the concentration camp. Bruno envies Shmuel, the boy in the camp, because there are more people and kids on the other side.

Gratefulness
It’s weird how 2 lives can be so different. Bruno and Shmuel share the same birth date, the same age. They both were obliged to live at Out-With. However, they both have completely different lives. Bruno wasn't grateful for what he had and maybe if he had been, the story wouldn't have ended like it did. Though of course, it’s just a story told by the author.

Why A Tragic Ending?
Why did the author end it in such a sad way? In the end, Bruno decides to sneak on the other side of the fence. The soldiers say it’s time to march. They take the prisoners to a place and kill all of the Jewish people but, hidden from the soliders, Bruno was with them. I think the author put that tragic ending to make us see how sad the time in history really was and how people, not just adults, got killed because of their religion. I think it’s not fair.

Child’s Point Of View
The author wrote this story in the child’s point of view mostly to show that people didn't understand what was going on around them during the Holocaust. I think the author wrote the point of view through a naive child to show the reader that before the event, everybody’s lives were just the same as ours. Also to show that even 9 year old kids were involved.

Foreshadowing
The author foreshadowed a lot!! In the titles, he would summarize the chapter into one small sentence. For example,'Bruno Tells A Perfectly Reasonable Lie'. I think the author could have added a bit more imagination to the titles, though I really liked the last chapter title, 'The Last Chapter'. It really brings an end and the reader can feel that something will end the story, whether it's good or bad. In the few last pages of the book you can really predict what's going to happen. Bruno is being taken away with the Jews because he was on the other side and is going on a 'march'. I predicted that their lives were going to end. I was right.

Symbols
You can find many symbols in this book but I found one that was big. The fence. It symbolizes divisions that shouldn't have been made.  Hitler decided that the Jewish are different from us. But what exactly is 'us'? We are no different from Jewish people. The fence can also symbolize 'no freedom'. The camp prevents the Jews from having their freedom and the fence keeps them from having their will.

Inferring
In this book you have to know some facts about the Holocaust and the reader has to infer. At the end when Bruno, Shmuel and other Jewish people go in this room and it goes black and Bruno's family can't find their little boy anymore, you have to infer that he, with the prisoners, got killed by poisonous gas. Or when Shmuel's father was sent to work and wasn't found again you have to think about what happened in a concentration camp.

Contrast
The reader views 2 lives that couldn't be more opposite even if they share the same ending. Bruno is worried about what kind of cake to give to Shmuel while Shmuel is worried about getting killed. Bruno believes that he and his friend couldn't be more the same.

Connection
This book is set in World War 2. It is a reminder of the rights with have in a democratic society. In the 20th century, the Jews were slowly deprived of their rights. At first, there were rumours in the radio and the news papers that the Jewish were thieves and that. Then they had to put the Star of David on their shirts to show that they were different. After that they were deprived of their jobs. Then they were sent to work camps to get murdered. All of that reminds me of last spring, when the Quebec government made a rule that groups couldn’t protest peacefully.  Our right to protest was modified. It's important to protect democratic rights such as free speech, the right to vote, the right to an education.

Remember
Fences like the one in the book still exist to remember the dark events. We should remember Bruno’s and Shmuel’s story for there is many more stories that are similar to this one. The lost stories must be retold to represent the people who couldn’t live and tell the story themselves.

Last week of school and beginning in a new year

The last week of school was pretty cool!! we had no homework and fun activities. Thanks to the parents comitty we were able to do some awesome crafts. Our art was a christmas tree out of popsicle sticks. We also ate rice krispies and milk organised by the parents. In the gym, we even played a game. Our class sang with some of the other classes and that was a great experience!! The last day was very comfortable because of our pyjamas. Grade 6 also made other crafts like decorating mini houses and candy cane mice which was nice. It was nice to have a break from school in the holidays and it was tough to come back!! Though our class got some glasses of hot chocolate and a small muffin. Tomorrow we are going on a field trip to see cegep garneau talk about electrons. I hope it's going to be interesting.
